8 on the 8th Race Report

Yes, Yes, I know, I organized the damn thing and then ran it on the 7th. You got a problem with that? I didn't think so. :D (why did you think I was being so lenient?)

We've had practically a foot of snow, well, okay, maybe it was 4". I thought it would be fun to run yesterday when it was coming down so beautifully, but a trip to the curb to pick up the recycling bin and a fall on my bum had me remembering the ice underneath. I decided the treadmill had more appeal than normal.

I did do a little carb loading and ate a pre-race breakfast plus a Celebrex for the ache in my left butt cheek. I forgot we have a new Tivo set up so I didn't have anything pre-recorded to watch. *moment of shock and shear panic* Luckily one of the high def channels had A River Runs Through It just starting. Man, that movie does it for me, unforgettable scenes and photography, sexy boys (back when I actually liked Brad Pitt), a love story and wonderful exchanges. This movie is good for my soul and was exactly what I needed to slog through 8 miles. I also had Man Steak T Shirt Pacer and yes, all of you to keep me going.

I didn't keep splits but started out around 11:30 and had to back that way the hell off. :D Well.... I thought I might be able to do it. hee hee. With a few walk breaks, hopping off a couple times to stretch the left side, and one trip to the fridge for liquids (you have to admit, that part is pretty cool, it's there whenever you want or need it), I was able to finish this bad boy in at a 12:22 pace at 1:39:xx. Sorry, my TM doesn't go to seconds after an hour has been logged. In the event of a tie, I will take closer to 1:40. :D

8 miles ~ 1:39: ~ 12:22 pace

In the end, I am really happy that I put this thing together. There is no possible way I would have been on the TM knocking out 8 miles today (nor would I have ever done a race in shorts and just a sports bra!). I'm seriously considering making this a monthly goal just to keep me honest and keep me pushing. Don't worry, I'm not going to drag you all along with me every month.

Please let me know when you have completed your race and posted. In true data girl geeky form, I'm starting a spreadsheet for the results. I probably won't post final results until Sunday night or Monday to give everyone time.

I'll leave you with Norman Maclean from the movie:
Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding.

GOOD LUCK, EVERYONE, and THANKS for JOINING ME!!

But some of us need pictures of the shorts and sports bra...:P Good job on the treadmill. Are you up for the 13 on the 13th? next month?

Oh, I get it now! TM = treadmill. Wow, I don't know how you spent that much time on the machine of dread, but good on you. And great results, too!

That's a lot of miles on the machine of doom! I was just telling a friend today how stinking scared to death I am of the TM!!! You all have me getting all excited to do my 8!

Marcy said...

Oooohhh OK pheewww I was so worried that Man Steak wouldn't be available to run with me tomorrow! You're so generous Nancy!! ;-)

AWESOME JOB CHICA!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

I am on an official month of rest right now (minus a fun 5K next weekend) or I would have loved to do this fun event! Maybe you could do a 9th on the 9th next month?

Way to go Nancy! Take care of that cheek after your slip on the ice :)

Michelle said...

Great job!!

Bummer that you won't be running it tomorrow with the rest of us, though. I am excited but a little nervous, as well.

Awesome run race director! I think we can definitely give you a pass on you doing your 8 on the 7th. I am gong to be out of town and will do my 8 late tonight and get you results Sunday late pm. Hope that is ok and congrats again.
You rock!

You go girl!! I was definitely imagining my competition this morning. :)

My god woman... 8 miles on the treadmill even with Brad and Matt is just a boring slog. (As you will recall I am not a treadmill fan.) Well done. If you can do 8 miles on a treadmill, I reckon you can do a full marathon in a blizard.

I just came in from my 8 (well 9.36 miles.) Full race report on my blog in a bit.

But I ran outside in the blowing snow (ugh), Leaping downed wires in a single bound... (the plow on our street.), avoiding on coming traffic... and covered in salt. (I am starting to think that maybe I am the crazy one.)

Done at 1:38:51. (Split: 49:14 then the wind picked up. What was it my grandmother used to say about wind.)

Of course NOW the sun comes out...

Nancy -- great job! I have never been able to stand a TM for more than 4.5 miles at one time so I'm in awe of anybody who can do 8 on the dreadmill. Glad you ran on Friday to lead the way for the rest of us.

I did my 8 miles this AM and am writing it up on my blog right now. I'll post on the "Results" discussion on the forum, too.

Kudos to you for being able to run on the treadmill. I was forced to do so earlier this week (HORRID rain in Seattle), but could only last 4 1/4 miles!

We're really blessed today -- not a cloud in the sky. Hubby and I are currently waking up with a cup of coffee, but we have steel-cut oats cooking on the stove and will be heading out soon. Since we're training for a marathon today's run will be 16-17 miles, but we'll take pictures at the 8- and 16-mile marks. I may be too wiped this afternoon to post (plus we'll be meeting friends tonight for dinner), so I may not have my race report posted until tomorrow.

Way to go Nancy! You did a great job organizing the "8 on the 8th" race.

I am done with my "8 on the 8th" at 1:06:31.

Enjoy my blog report!

why are you thanking me for running? Thank YOU for giving me something more exciting to do than just run in big circles. enjoy your weekend.

renae said...

Great job Nancy! I was lucky today weather-wise so I got to run the 8 miles outside (finished in 1:10) and far, far away from the treadmill. I wrote it up on my blog. Thanks again, this was a lot of fun!

Marcy said...

Hey girl! I'm not going to post til tomorrow or Monday but I got done in 1:10:16 :-)

Thanks for this challenge! I was inspired by my wife, who let me know about it and convinced me to push past the 6 miles I had planned to run today. The 8 miles I did today (in 1:06) was the furthest I've run since a marathon in 2002, which put my knees out of running condition for a good many years. I guess I'm on the road to recovery, in addition to the road to my half of the marathon relay I'll be running with my wife in February!

Brian Sawyer said...

Here's my report, along with some surrounding context for my return to running. Thanks again for the inspiration!

Nancy, I did it. I did not run 8 miles since I'm just back to running after a year off. But I did 4.5 miles and 3.5 miles on the bike. You can read my report , it's up.

Thanks for doing this, I was definitely looking forward to it all week. The next one I'll be running the entire thing :)

Unknown said...

Wow, you did eight on a treadmill?!?!? I could NEVER do that. NEVER.

My report is up.

Will there be a 9 on the 9th next months?? wink wink. nudge nudge.

Kristina said...

1:03, thanks to perfect weather at 40 degrees and the thought that y'all were out there doing it, too. Posted my report on my blog.

Nice work Nancy! I'm home, showered, and no longer shivering, with a run recap posted!

Logged mine at 1:18:48. Blog report soon to come.

Thanks for spearheading this, Nancy! It was a brutal run for me, due to a nasty cold wind, but I enjoyed it knowing it was run with all my blogging buddies.

Michelle said...

Nancy, my race report is on my blog. Check it out! :-)

Way to go Nancy! You're an inspiration to us all. This was a great race. My report is now posted.

Great job, Nancy!! I don't think I could run that long on the dreadmill.

Oh, I'm done my 8. Details are in my blog.

Amy@RunnersLounge said...

Yeah Nancy - 8 on the treadmill - ick! I did finish the 8 outside today. I hope I didn't wake you this morning as I yelled your name in vain as I froze every part of my body. Know I really didn't mean all those mean things I said between miles 1-3. In the end, I really enjoyed the run!

When can we run again?

I got my report up, Nancy!

Thanks for the good times!

Thanks for organizing! It was a great event -- looking forward to running it on its second anniversary next year!

Hi Nancy,

My report post is up. The short version: I finished the 8 in 1:45, and if you are breaking it down remember I am in the new new age division of 50!

Great job Nancy! I don't think I could ever do 8 miles on the TM. The closest I've gotten was 7 and I thought I was going to need to be locked in a padded room for a while afterwards. I'll have my report up on my blog tomorrow. =)

Susan said...

Nancy,
I learned about your race from my brother-in-law Topher. Thanks for the challenge! This was the farthest I had run since my first marathon this past October. It felt so great to run longer today. My time was 1:21:03.

Nancy - read about your race on numerous fitness blogs I read. Unfortunately, I don't have a blog of my own yet - though that may change. If you're allowing blog readers to participate along with the writers (maybe you're giving us our own category?), I ran my 8 miles today in Central Park at a new PR of 1:12:43. Well, actually I ran 8.26 miles in a bit longer, but when I averaged my pace, that's where I would have finished 8 miles. And since I don't have a blog but you may be separating into categories, I'm a 22F. Thanks for inspiring me to get off my butt and go running - motivation is always the hardest part for me.

I did it!! Like you I ran mine on the 7th at a new trail with a friend of mine. Not sure of the exact mile but I think we got the eight or something close to it in.

Does that count?

I finished. Finally. Where's the medical tent?

I ran a half marathon with almost 4 miles tacked on after the finish line. My first 8 miles were in 1:27:06 according to garmin. It was done in dry 50 degree weather. I should take a penalty for not having to deal with snow.

Bah...1:39:24...I didn't have a very good run, but I am glad I did it! :)

I ran my 8 this morning finally after being sick the past few days. Time and race report are posted. Thanks for the motivation Nancy. Great job on the TM!

I did eight on date eight on the ninth since I was busy yesterday. 1:07:27 as part of a 15 mile run. A good effort to get a lot of folks out there running!

Unknown said...

i forgot to post my time earlier. you're probably too busy to gather that from my report. 1:28:00 (yes, i thought it was weird that it was even too)

Unknown said...

btw, earlier i suggested 9 on the 9the 9th next month, but that won't work b/c it's a wed. But 10 on the 10th in Feb is doable...that falls on a sunday. :)

I have posted my race report.

I completed my 8 miles this morning in 1:07:42.

w00t! w00t!

Anyone up for 12 on the 12th in January?

Hi Nancy,

My race report is up.

Thanks for organizing this, and great work everyone who ran! What a cool event.

Great job Nancy, both on your run and for organizing it. What a great way to help motivate people to get out and run...

By the way, for your results spreadsheet, I ran mine in 1:05:55(8:14 pace). I had to move it to the 9th (so 8 on the weekend of the 8th) because of the hike that went way longer than I thought (18.3 miles!).

Nat said...

Great job on the run! I also love A River Runs Through it...great movie!

Dave Fleet said...

Yikes! Forgot to post my time just now. Sorry!

Pokey said...

Hey Eric....13 on the 13th is actually RNR! So 13.1 to be exact :P

Great job Nancy! I couldt make a run on the 8th due to some scheduling, and a week off from running meant I couldnt knock down 8 miles. I was in rest-mode after our 11 miler last weekend that wiped me out.

I opted for 5 on the 9th ;) Not that it counts for much, but it got me out and moving!!!

Database Diva said...

Congratulations Nancy, and thanks for proposing it. I posted on the Runner's Lounge forum, but I guess I should go write a real report before I go to bed!

Hi Nancy, I heard about this through the RBF site - great idea! Here's my report. I finished in 1:33:59. If there are divisions, I'm a 32F.

Nancy

Sorry for the late report... I was up at my parent's cottage for the weekend with no computer:-(
Anyway, my 8 was in 49:18. I've been doing these interval 8's alot lately and it felt good to just run at one pace.
Thanks for allowing me to participate in what I expect will become a huge event.

Great race! You were an awesome race director. I've enjoyed reading everyone's reports!
