Catching Up

After a virtual race, I like to let the results "sit" for a while. Plus, they take so damn long to do that I need a break. :D There is the added fact that I needed the break to get the chipped tooth fixed and shave the cavegirl legs!! Thanks, everyone, for making it another great race. I'm eyeing another one, I'll let you know soon. I know you are dying to have one more thing on your calendars. If you have suggestions, I always like ideas.

When I take this long of a break, I tend to overflow with stuff. I need to unload a few things:

Boston and Harvard: Great experience, loved the campus and the history, class was pretty good, scored a couple great books, loved the runs along the river (2 blocks from my hotel) although one of them was pretty rough. Had dinner at the Harvard Faculty Club and scored some great t-shirts. We all seem smarter when we wear them. Ate my weight in lobster rolls and clam chowder.

Boston Marathon Memorabilia - marathondudebill is the coolest eva. He sent me some stuff from Boston. Do you think anyone would believe I have an official bib, the warming gloves and a sticker that says I did 26.2?? Well, in my dreams would I be fast enough. My cabbie was cracking up when I said I hope to live long enough that age will offset speed. Thanks so much for the care package, Bill!!

p90x - have you guys heard of this?? some sort of extreme home work out, body shaping, boot camp type of program . I am still in search of runner body. You've seen me kicking myself, the epiphanies, the promises.... running just doesn't do enough especially when I have to rest my feet more than most people.

p90x was acquired through a lovely friend who shall remain nameless but knows who she is. We are loving it but it kicks our butts every day. I'd love to talk more about it if anyone has tried it. 6 or 7 days a week, minimum of 53 minutes per day but sometimes longer. Think Extreme - one day I seriously thought of phoning a friend for help in drying my hair!! Every day I think it might kill me and if it doesn't, I want to die. hee hee. This has to be doing something, right? I hope to have INCHES of results. I'll keep you posted. (I've completed the first 6 days)

My last long run before Dam to Dam sucked - I mean really really sucked. I was hot and red-faced and I had absolutely nothing. I walked and ran 7.2 miles but it was pathetically pathetic. Help??!! Do I chalk it up to p90x?? heat?? Should I try to repeat it?? I have two weeks before the race. I seriously need advice. Already planning to take it pretty easy on p90x the week of the race but I hate this because it seriously messes with my confidence. I've done two 6's, two 8's, two 10's, an 11 and a 12.2 so I know I can do this but crap, I couldn't even do 7.

I think that's all for now. The Hub is off to Japan and China this week so I am pacing myself with the kiddos and thinking about how to get all the workouts in.
Have a great week, everyone!!

I think you'll be fine. Sometimes it takes a crappy run to make us appreciate all the good ones before it and those to come.

Rock it out, sister!

Those bad ones always happens, so at least you got it out of the way BEFORE the race!

I am intrigued by your new workout, I've never heard of it. Please keep us posted!

I *think* I may have heard of p90x before from someone around here but I can't remember. What a help I am :P Hopefully someone will have the 411 on it :-)

oooooh...i've been tempted to get the p90x before, but never was brave enough. actually looks fun, in a weird way. you'll have to let us know all about your progress. also, i think there are a bunch of blogs out there that track people's experiences -- you might be interested in that. good luck!

Wow if it's kicking your butt that much it must be a great workout. I don't think I'd make it 6 days with that sort of stress!
Sometimes we just have bad runs. I think if you've done two 12's, you'll be fine for DtD. Just go into it healthy and energized!

You'll be fine on race day. Those pre-race runs just let you know what you should be working on...like laying off the p90x till after the race...

Glad to hear you had a good time in Boston, isn't that Bill a sweetheat! Glad too you were able to get your tooth fixed.

Now relax about your race, you've done all the hard work, just go "do it"....you'll be fine.

Is P90x all muscle stuff? If it's leg intensive it may be causing your legs to be tired. (And if you've cut carbs from your diet, you may be having a fuel issue.)

On the other hand, it might just be an off run.

I always relax, but I'm sort of lazy like that. I wouldn't over train or anything before your next race.

You'll be great.

I've watched the infomercial on that px90 workout many times, and it looks tough. I would like to try it, but I couldn't deal with the price right now.

My brother does P90X and a co-worker from the Navy does it too. They both say it kicks their tail! I borrowed the CDs once to make copies, but forgot to and still haven't done so. I need to, but can't find the time to do P90X right now...

I hear ya on the "trying to workout while hubby is away" situation. I did it this past week, hard, but got it done. you can too...

Your next run will be great! I'm sure!

that workout system sounds interesting, it could turn you into Bodzilla.

I wouldn't worry about 1 crappy run...look at the entire body of (training) work. Remember not to microfocus on individual workouts as there are too many variances that affect them. You've done the training. Go in to the race with confidence!

I think you'll be fine, Nanc. You've got the mileage under your belt....so who cares if you had a lousy run....I dont think it will make a difference for you.

So STOP WORRYING! You are ready for this, and will do GREAT.

I am off to go check out the p90x.....I sooooooo need something like that!!!

We have a friend who has done the the p90 program, he says it is brutal but the results are there! I am agreement with others that you might be overdoing it with the running and the p90x, might wait until after the race.

I had the worst run the weekend before the 1/2 mar. But had a great 1/2 ... I think you just have a bad run now and again!

I've done the P90X, and the first week is tough - but you will be amazed at how much of a difference you will see in weeks 2 and 3 - not necessarily in your body yet, but what you can do. I wish I had stuck to it...I don't remember why we stopped...my husband and I really liked doing the yoga together. Maybe we should pick it up again.

I started doing it with the sound off after a couple weeks - cuz the guy is a little annoying.

You had one off run, it happens to everyone. You will be fine!

p90x sounds HARD CORE. Not sure it would be a good fit for this laid back mama - but kudos for you for sticking it out and becoming a ripped cave woman!

Don't let one bad run get you down. You've been working SO hard. I think sometimes the bad runs get thrown into the mix to help us appreciate the good ones. :)

Best wishes for a smooth week without the hubby. Hang in there!

I've heard of that workout. I'm too much of a weenie to even attempt that stuff :-)

Nanc, I know you will be great. You know I had the same shartty long run prior. It will be great do not even sweat it :-)

I know a runner doing the PX90 who has now put running on the back burner till completing the 90 days. She said she has heard a few people telling her it can interfere with the results. That is just what I have heard, but you did'nt hear it from me. hehehe!

Love the Harvard shirt. I need to get on of those to confuse the stuff outta people. LOL!

Ummm if you know any way I can get the PX90 on the (clearing throat) on the down low hit me up.

Tigerlilly has done/is doing P90X. Have you been to her blog? If you can stick with it (and why wouldn't you?!) you'll get great results, I'm sure.

I'd chalk that bad 7 miles up to a bad run, and that's it. If you've done those other long runs, you'll be fine. Race day always has that special vibe to it, so as long as you're healthy and not sore from P90X, I'm sure it will be great!

Good luck being a single parent this week.

Hi Nanc

I'm jealous of the trip to Boston because I miss the place already.. it is a really cool cultural experience and so different from what we have here in the midwest. I love the whole t system and the way you can get around without a car... among other things.

You are very welcome for the stuff I sent. Honestly, I feel so fortunate to have experienced that race and being able to share it.. well it made me happy. I was so excited the day I sent it and couldn't wait for you to get it.

I've followed your training pretty closely and I think you are going to do better at Dam to Dam than you are giving yourself credit for. But I'm ok with that. Whatever the time, I am quite sure you will do it with style:-) Take care of those legs in the meantime and try not to do too much.

I have seen the infomercials for p90x and thought it was quite intriguing...

don't worry about that last long sucky run. panic always comes around to mess with your moo before a big race. just don't listen to it. th ebad runs just happen, try not to let it get to you - there is always a better one around the corner!

Hey - I got my book today (Girls who love to run). Thanks again. I'm going to try to share this at the local elementary school next year by volunteering to go in and read to the Kindergarten students. Might be able to get someone to read the Spanish as well...and there are bi-lingual and ESL kids here locally. :)

Not all runs can be great! Chill out the race will go really well! =)

I think you'll be fine, just as everyone has already re-affirmed. Sometimes a bad training run just makes us doubt ourselves.

I am going to check out the p90x. I need something to kick my butt this summer!

I had a really bad run about 3 weeks out from the race...don't try to repeat it just move forward. There is such a difference between a hot training run and a race!

The next one will be great! Boston sounds terrific.. I may be there next month - so maybe I can hit some of the spots you mentioned.

How far is the Dam to Dam? I went through the same thing before my
25k--crappy, crappy runs, and I don't mean needing the bathroom. Walking, dying, vowing to not do the race, everything imaginable, and then all of a sudden I did the Louisville mini and things came around that day. I'm betting the day of the race you'll do fine, even if you just get through it, and then will be over that hump. Good luck, I'll be waiting to hear how you do! How about the next virtual race a 12 on the 12th (July)? Lots of people will be training for longer races for fall, so maybe it will work? And I don't think anyone will have to do it on a treadmill. Or how about 12 miles in one week to be completed by July 12? I know we're skipping 11, so that could be an option too. I've heard of the p90x, but haven't used it. I figure anything that will help has to be good. At least when you are done anything after that will seem easy.

Good luck on the p90x program. Sorry 'bout the rotten long run but I think even a bad run is far better than no run at all.

Feel that? That is the good vibes I keep sending you. Hope all is going well this week! I actually look at a bad run before a race as a good omen. Every race that I have done well in I have had a bad training run in right before. This is a good sign.

I know, I know... it sounds nutty - but it is true.

Get excited - you will really enjoy this race. And if not, it will give us a chance to catch up.

I am sure your weekend is busy, but if you have time on an afternoon/evening for a run, let me know.

hope all is well with hub OOT I know how that can be without kids and it isn't always fun! Hang in there and i'm looking forward to your next virtual race!

Nancy,

A little late in coming but here is some pep talk for your up coming race. A few weeks ago I went out for my last long run before the Quicksilver 50k. It was a 11.7 mile run in the hills. It absolutely sucked. I mean the first 4 miles felt good, but then I was dreading every step I was taking. I started doubting myself, wondering how I would ever run well on the coming race a few days later.

Come race day, I ran the best I had ever ran. Go figure.

A lot happens. For me the bad training run was in the middle of the day after I had eaten lunch and had been up for a while and walking around. My legs were tired and so on. A lot of factors. Nothing compares to race morning when you wake up, eat a healthy breakfast and do nothing but running. Aside from the physical feeling, well you also have the huge motivational factor of a bunch of people around you.

Don't be discouraged. Know that race morning will tell a different story.
