9 on the 9th: Sweetheart Shuffle RACE REPORT

I actually did it. I wasn't sure if I could complete this, in fact I thought about doing just 6 and putting my earlier in the week 3 with it (I hear the race director is really lenient that way!), but I made it. Slow, but Steady.

It started with a stellar meal the night before at my favorite brewery and included 2L of pub beer and some basic bar food: Nachos, Titan Toothpicks, Beer Bread and cheese. Yeeeeah. I would normally not do that before a race but decided to see how it would work. There was one time way back where we signed up for a local 5k and then decided to drink several bottles of wine, but I try not to go back to that day too often...

I woke up feeling fine and downed a Vanilla Cliff Shot in honor of Vanilla's recent adoption by the Cliff people -- lucky stiff. Then it was off to the treadmill. I decided to choose a movie that had about 120 minutes on it, just in case I could do 5 or 6 and walk the rest in. Well, that is basically what I did, sort of. Incorporated some walking whenever I needed it, but actually when I started to do that, it allowed me to run slightly faster when I was running. It was a great choice to put a movie on, I couldn't see sitting on the couch to finish it, I might as well keep moving as long as I feel good.

Amazingly, I feel pretty dang good. I haven't had much pain or discomfort. Perhaps there is progress in this ole bod? I think the PT, professional insoles and all the cross training and weights might be starting to pay off. I was pretty PO'd when Katie Holmes ran a marathon (sans bra, buts that another story) then went out with Tom that night in heels. Guess what, I put on my super high heeled brown boots and went out tonight!! Yes, I realize it was no marathon, and I will always need the jogging bra, but THIS IS PROGRESS, PEOPLE!!

Besides my cute baldy pacer, I invited Derek and his G2 along with me. I , like Derek, prefer the light purple. Normally I am pretty much bringing up the back of the back of the pack and there is nobody back there with me. Having Derek and Baldy along makes for a very nice improvement. :D Well, I did say SWEETHEART SHUFFLE.
This virtual thing really works! Got me off my keester for longer than I would have dreamed of going today. As far as I am concerned, 9 on the 9th was already a success. You guys are just icing on the cake.
I can't wait to read all your race reports!! Good luck, everyone!

Nice run, Nancy!! Woo hoo! I'm turned on to that G2 stuff too, via Dee Dee. I'm no longer carrying Accelerade during races. It's good for after, but not during. You can keep Derek though :-D

Just for you I am going to do 9 miles twice tomorrow. You'll get a best of time. :)

Well done my dear. You're my idol.

I have to ask, what's a titan toothpick?

Nancy said...

Titan Toothpicks
Our signature starter combines smoked chicken, Jack cheese, peppers and onions in hand-rolled, fried tortillas. Served with guacamole, sour cream, fresh salsa and spicy chipotle BBQ sauce.

You know, health food.

THERE YOU ARE!!!

You ROCK - you not only did it, but you came BACK to do it!! I'm so glad you are feeling better and are back out there!! Congratulations!!

Viv said...

Way to go Nancy, I would say you are back :-D
Derek is such a cutie isn't he. LOL @ Katie and no bra, I wish I could do that.
Titan toothpicks must have one now.

Thanks race director for letting me join in :-) When I got the comment about adjusting the race to suit me, I got all giddy telling the hubby. He looked at me like I was nutz.

Hiya Nancy, been a while since we've commented on each other. Great job getting out there and running. That is one thing that is great about virtual runs: they are great in motivating!

I've also ran my 9 on the 9th today. Came in at 1:14:36. Link to http://journeytoendurance.blogspot.com/

Can't wait to read your race recap!

The marathonmama recruited me for this race, and the 9 on the 9th gun will go off for me around 1:00 (after a nine mile warm up!) Not quite sure what the official rules are about positing results, but I'll figure that out. Keep up the good work, Nancy - Clearly, you ARE a runner AND a winner!

Hi Nancy, well I'm back from my very first Sweetheart Shuffle and had a blast...

Way to go on your run, that was awesome!!! Especially your pre-race meal, I must try that!

My run results on on my blog http://lilyontheroad.blogspot.com, if you want to check it out!

Thanks so much for "putting all this together".

Cheers,
Laurel (Lily)

Thanks, again, Nancy for organizing this. Great motivation. Looks like you had a good run.

The only way I could figure to report on 9 miles was to just take the average pace of my 14.11 mile run and extrapolate 9 miles. Doug left me in the dust but this was a really sweet run for me. Pace for 14.11 miles was 7:35.8; multiplied by 9 miles is 1:08:23 for the 9 on the 9th.

(BTW, that pace for 13.1 miles is almost 10 minutes faster than the cross-country half marathon I ran in September.)

My report is here

Nat said...

Ok, so clearly these people are running modified miles or miles are longer up where we are Nancy.

The race report is not yet up since I need to eat and find my glasses. I did a total of 18.4 miles today.

First 9: 2:09
Second 9: 2:15

I actually feel really really good right now. Race report to follow.

I'm glad you made it Nancy! My schedule called for 20 today, but at 10 my body called for time out. I'm not sure what my time for the 9 miles was but I ran about 10.25 in 1:50. I'm resting now and will try for more on the treadmill later.

Michelle said...

Guess what, Nancy? I actually did it, too!!!!! I forgot to take a pic of my Garmin before downloading the stats onto my computer, but a race report it now up on my blog. :-)

Great run, Nancy! I did my 9 in two days. 4.5 on Friday and 4.5 today. I also ran with the purple G2. Pretty good stuff. My combined times from both days for the 9 miles is 2:37:24 ! Yes, I know, a snail's pace, but I am thrilled to have finished!

Thanks for being a very kind and generous race director! :-)

Nancy,

I broke off the last two miles of my run tonight. Here are the results for 9 miles 1:47:05 or an 11:53 pace. Thanks for reminding me. I was a bit out of it this past week and it slipped my mind. Thanks again. :)

can I petition the race director for a second entry? my sorta report is posted. have a great Sunday...what will we do without football? oh, right, college basketball. are you a hawkeye fan? I've always had a weakness for Steve Alford - he'd make a nice pacer, too bad he went to New Mexico.

Yes! please include me in the 9 on the 9th! I have not had a lot of blogging time lately, hopefully things at work are starting to calm down :)

Congrats on your great run!

If you do a 3 on the 3rd or even a 6 on the 6th I'll be happy to join the fun . . . I'm a bit out of my desired fitness level and running routine right now. I will be training for a 10K this spring, though - and reading blogs like yours might just be the motivation I need to get back into the swing of distance running.

Thanks for sharing your passion!

I might have come in dead last if you're using gun time, having just finished up at 11:30 this morning, but my chip time was 1:17:45. Race report to follow on my blog. Thanks to Nancy for another great race!

Great race Nancy, you made it. I injured my Achilles tendon while running. I hope the race director has insurance. Actually what happened is that my sock must have slipped down and my shoe rubbed against it for some time. I have the strength/flexibility with it and it does not hurt. But when I put on shoes that hit that spot, that is a different subject.

OMG, this is getting competetive! Everyone is getting so fast! After running a 12K race in 1:01:40 yesterday (that's not the proper distance for your virtual thingee) today I ran 9.5 miles with a friend in 1:29:29. So that's what I'll claim (along with K but she doesn't blog), 1:29:29 for my 9.5/10 (b/c the half mile extra was inexact)for the official 9/9, a 9:57 pace. We kept movin' at least. It's hilly on the Mt. Vernon Trail out by Mt. Vernon. Maybe I'll post about it when I get to it.

I don't know what I love more... the fact you kicked total ass or the fact that I now need a titan toothpick.

Hi, i'm new here! In fact so new that i only do 3 miles so far. So, yesterday i did my 3 and thought in my head how great it would be the day i can do 9 with you all! Thanks Nancy for a very wonderful virtual race! Terrific! Please check out my running blog: runningdowndreams.wordpress.com/

Nancy, Mark was going to give me a 9 mile split (he's taken over that Garmin LOL!), but he wasn't sure which 9 miles to give me- the first ones, the last (faster ones), or the middle ones. I think your idea of using my average pace and calculating nine miles is the best idea. So that would give me 1:20:50 for the 9 miles! Cool! Thanks Nancy!

Bob - BlogMYruns.com said...

Hey Nanc I figure it was about 16 miles/ 11 min pace over the 3 hours

thx
