A Virtual Race for Running Blogging Friends

A plan has been hatched. Vickie and I were saying we needed a race in the near future. There is none, you say? Let's make our own. We are putting together a virtual race for Dec 8th (let's just say anywhere between the 7th and 9th -- see how accomodating these race directors are?!). Run 8miles on the 8th with all of your closest blogger friends.

Let us know if you are in. We will keep track of everyone who runs and times, and also hope that you will even write race reports. I doubt there will be tshirts unless anyone has a brilliant idea. We might come up with some ideas for prizes. Suggestions welcome.

Hope you can join us!!

It just so happens for all Iowa BRFs there is a great race on this very day. I am running the All9yards Sycamore 8 out at Maffitt's Reservoir. (http://www.all9yards.com/sycamore8) It's my first year for doing this race, but I hear good things. So while it may be a virtual race for some, it does not need to be for all. :-)

I'm so in if my hip heals up! You better hope it doesn't :-P

That's an excellent suggestion! I'm in. I'll even put it in my race calendar! Thanks, guys!

OK, I'm in -- 8 miles on the 8th. Can we use Amy's runner's handicap to report our times? :)

I am slated for 9 miles on the 8th... so count me in and I'll clock myself for 8, then keep going for one more.

Great idea.

I'm in! Just let me know the details. A very cool idea.

BTW, my boys loved the spiders. ;-) You didn't have to do it...but I'm still glad that you did.

I'm not sure I can do that much mileage at that point...but it's a fabulous idea!

What a creative idea!
Could be icy here, though.
The Reindeer Run in Mpls is on December 1... Too bad it isn't a week later. We will see what we can plan.

The Laminator said...

Sounds great Nancy...as long as there's no ice here...i'm in!

Amy@RunnersLounge said...

Sounds like a great plan Nancy! I didn't know there was a race around here on that day - wanna' go?

And yes, I think we should be able to use a handicap of some kind. Especially if it is crappy outside or we are forced to do it on a treadmill.

Amy@RunnersLounge said...

One more thought..I like the way POM and Database Diva set up the Lounge Group and the "stats" forum - its a great way to see how everyone is doing. It might work for this run too.

Count me in. I bet Race Ready could help us with the shirts. Call them and see how affordable a group rate is. Find a printer to donate (or give you a great rate) and add enough to the price of the shirts to cover the postage to send them out.

Of course this is time consuming, and there is a cost involved. How about everyone make their own theme shirt and adds the picture to their race report?

Unknown said...

i think i'm in.

Debbi said...

This fits right in with my training plans. Great idea!

RunnerGirl said...

I'm in for sure. And I hope we find a way to do Tshirts because really, that's the only reason I do races!

Pat said...

I'm in. I have to do 18 on that day, so maybe I'm in twice.

Cafepress will let you design your own tee for $14 and up.

I'm running the Dallas Marathon on the 9th so if that counts - I'm in!

Sunshine said...

Thanks for the visit.
Re: your question... way up in the NW part of the state. But I enjoy reading your blog because it seems like a connection.

In answer to Jamie's question ... the Dallas Marathon ought to count?!
Good luck, everybody.

Count me in !!! Whether it rain, shine, snow, sleet, hail...whatever BRING IT ON BABY! I am ready on the 8th of Dec.

L*I*S*A said...

Love it! I'm definitely in!!

Christie said...

Aww man. I would love to do it, but I don't think I'll be up to 8mi by then. So far, the most I've run is 4mi. I'll probably be up to 6mi or so by then.

ws said...

I'll probably decide today if I'm doing a full or half marathon the week before...either way I'm sure I can muster another 8 the following week, so you should probably count me in. being sick and insane like that.

sRod said...

I'm on it like a bad rash. Just sign me up for the 10 mile group.

teacherwoman said...

I think I might be in!

I love virtual races. I run two or three every year. For instance, every September 11th I run a 3K "race" around the Jefferson Memorial Tidal Basin, starting at 9:43 am if it's a weekend or at noon on a workday, counting slowly to 184 as I go (184 victims at the nearby Pentagon).

zanne said...

count me in! whether i do 8 on the 8th or the 9th though remains to be seen - waiting for next installment on my schedule. this is such a fun idea!

nwgdc said...

I'm in! I'll be sure to include my MapMyRun certified course for authenticity too!

Topher said...

It's ON! Anyone else in KC want to run it? If there are no shirts, we'll at least have donuts.

I'm in - if I can get my distance back by then from my injury situation.

Sounds GREAT! What an idea :) I'm in!

Mendy said...

Nancy, count me in too!

Database Diva said...

Me too! I love races that don't cost $90!

Midwest said...

Fun! Count me in.

Wes said...

First 8 miles of my marathon are IN :-)

David H. said...

Great idea! Not sure what my mileage will be at that time - you should blog about it a couple of days before hand to remind us all.

P.O.M. said...

P.S.
I'm totally "down" with a shirt from a virtual race. How fun!!! Have you looked at Running Banana?

Unknown said...

I'm scheduled for 16 miles that day, so I'll just run TWO virtual races! What fun.

Running Ragged said...

Count me in...it's on my calendar now! Great idea!!!

Hi Nancy,

I'm a shameless lurker on your blog but if you'll have me, I'll pitch in my two cents... errr... eight miles!

Bob A said...

Looks like I'll have to try for the 9th. I found out yesterday that our church is participating in a Habitat build on 6th-8th and they'll probably start too early on the 8th for me to run 8 miles.

Liz said...

COunt me in...I don't think that I will be able to do 8...but maybe a fraction there of!

Maddy said...

I'm in! I have 15 on my schedule that day. The first 8 are all for you Nancy!

Runner Leana said...

A virtual race - I'm so in! I have 7 miles scheduled that day, but sure, I think I can bump it up to 8!

Ian said...

I'm in. I have 10 miles scheduled for the 8th so I'll time the first 8 separate from the last two, or more likely I'll just drop the last two. ;)

Dan Seifring aka "OBRATS" said...

I'm in.

David said...

In response to Marcy's public prodding, I'll give this a shot, also. Great idea!

Michelle said...

I'm in, too!!! :-)

Pokey said...

As long as I don’t have to do 22 on the 22nd, count me in!!!! :)

lifestudent said...

I am gonna have to say "maybe" ... I run 26.2 on 12/2 - which means that I will be in recovery at this time. If I am itching for a run and feeling good then I am in.

Tom@RunnersLounge said...

Nancy, This is a great and fun idea. Count me in and I have some other friends who are excited about it.

Thanks.

Jes said...

Ooooo count me in! That sounds like fun!!!

renae said...

Hi Nancy - I'm a lurker on your site, Hope I can join in the fun!

Reluctant Runner said...

I'm in, too, Nancy. I'll have to decide if I'm running the "Canadian" version (8K) or the U.S. version (8 miles or 12.87475K ... definitely not 13 ;-)).

Terrific idea .. it's always great to have a goal.

mbbored said...

I'm in too, but probably on Sunday. Something about being evicted and having to move will take up my Saturday.

Marathoner in Training said...

Thanks Nancy for the invite, I will complete all 8 at one time this weekend for this virtual race.

ShoreTurtle said...

Thanks for the invite.

Jamie said...

Another runner IN for the 8 on the 8th, though I'll be running on the 9th...

Thanks!
